Differences Between Crimp-Down and Punch-Down Connectors

When you are comparing the differences between crimp-on connectors and punch-down connectors there are several factors to take into consideration. Each connector has its own advantages and disadvantages. The type of connector that you’ll want to use will depend on the task you are trying to complete. However it is generally accepted that self terminating crimp on connectors are easier to use than punch down connectors.

The standard connector used is the crimp-on connector. It has 8 pins which connect to the four cables using any standard crimping tool. This type of connector is used on almost every job with a few exceptions. It is a far easier method to use when you compare the crimp-on connector vs punch-down connectors.

However punch-down connectors have some very specific uses you should be aware of. They are very valuable when you are using a large connector block such as a 66 block connector. This is typically used in extensive networks or telemarketing sales rooms to support numerous phone lines. They punch from the central host and are connected using various bridges or hubs. There is no comparison between crimp-on connectors and punch-down connectors when you are evaluating a job of this nature.
